History of Alfalfa
A man named Wendelin Grimm came from Germany to Carver County with his family in 1857.
Grimm was a farmer and brought with him a small container of alfalfa seeds from Germany.
He planted them and they grew. When winter came around most of the alfalfa was killed under the extreme conditions.
Grimm then took the surviving seeds and planted them again the next season. He continued to do this for many years until eventually he created seeds that could survive the winter.
Wendelin Grimm's alfalfa made the Midwest dairy industry possible.
