History of the Soybean
In 1929 Walter J. Morse4, an agriculture scientist began an exploration in Asia, gathering varieties of soybeans. When he returned he had 10,000 new varieties.
1932-33 Ford Motor Company spent $1 million+ on soybean research. By 1935 every care involved in Ford manufacturing had soy involved in its making.
WWII created a boom in demand for soy oil because the U.S. was unable to import oil.
In 1946 the U of M and Jean Lambert developed 18 new soybean varieties that were adapted to the harsh Minnesota climate, making Minnesota a leading soybean producer.
